ImageOne of the most important towns in Etruscan times, it produced artistic works of great value, such as the Chimera, a refined bronze statue that is now kept in Florence. The town went on flourishing under the Romans, when the Theatre, the Thermal Baths and the Amphitheatre were built. With the spreading of Christianity, Arezzo became the seat of the episcopacy and the Old Cathedral was built. Important Ghibelline town, it was defeated by the Sienese army in the Battle of Campaldino, which also Dante Alighieri took part to on the Guelphs’ side. The Church of San Domenico is one of the most famous sacred buildings in Arezzo, due to the wooden crucifix by Cimabue, that is considered one of the masterpieces of the thirteenth-century painting.
The Medicean Fortress, precious example of sixteenth-century military architecture, was planned by Antonio di Sangallo and built by the will of Cosimo I Medici, in the half of 1500.
